Coir Blocks

To keep your snails you will need a substrate (soil/peat) base for them to live in, In the wild Giant African Land Snails will bury themselvs in the soil or under foliage to protect themselfs from heat, predators and to lay eggs, this should be kept moist but not sodden, As a guide if you place your hand onto the surface of the soil it should leave your hand with small debris particles not soak you hand.

In many ways coir is the product most like peat but has many attributes in its own right. Produced entirely from waste coconut fibres and dust it is a totally natural, renewable resource, Good for burrowing and laying eggs. It is relatively clean to work with, it holds moisture well which helps maintain humidity, easy to re-use. not acidic, eco-friendly, and by buying dehydrated, compressed blocks means you are guaranteed a sterile, pest-free substrate.

These Coir blocks are available in convenient blocks, to reconstitute your blocks you will need a large watertight bucket or bowl, you then add 3 litres of water (warm water acts faster) per block, leave to stand for 24 hours (this will even out the water content of your finished material).
You will find the blocks will expand to as much as three times their original size making approximately 9-10 litres of soil. Now you can break the material up with either a small spade or fork or by using your hands.
You mix is now ready to use.

Your snail tank should have a substrate base of anything between 4-8 inches deep depending on the size of your snail.
